From The Jakarta Globe:

Staging demonstrations in front of the Ministry of National Education’s office and the House of Representatives, Sulistyo, chairman of the Indonesian Teachers Union (PGRI), said educators were pushing for what they deserved — better representation from the government, better coordination between regional and central administrations to address teacher shortages and low salaries…

Also attending the rallies were contract teachers, who demanded better attention from the ministry and job security guarantees.   Ani Agustina, who heads an advocacy group for contract teachers, said the government should fast-track regulations currently under discussion at the House to protect those employed on short-term contracts.   “Some contract teachers are paid as little as Rp 50,000 [$5.50] a month,” she said, adding that there were about 427,000 contract teachers across the nation.
